History of the David Lindsay Historic Site Cemetery
by Scott Martin, David Lindsay descendant
Patriot David Lindsay, his wife Mary Lindsay and many family members were early pioneer settlers of Shelby County, Alabama. Shelby County was created by an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly on 7 February 1818, from former Creek Indian Territory ceded in the Treaty of Fort Jackson on 9 August 1814. The county was formed out of the northern portion of what was then Montgomery County. In 1816, Patriot, David Lindsay is found as head of household in the Mississippi Territory (what is now present day Alabama). He is then enumerated on the 1820 Shelby County, Alabama Federal Census, with he and his wife listed in the household. Patriot David Lindsay was also issued a land grant in 1824 for 79.28 acres of land in Shelby County, Alabama.
David Lindsay’s birth date of 1750 and his death date of ANTE 7 February 1842* are the best known to the Lindsay Family and his descendants. David Lindsay is enumerated in Shelby County, Alabama on the 1830 Federal Census, listed as “of eighty and under 90.” David Lindsay is not found on the 1840 Alabama Federal Census and his estate was settled in 1844. Furthermore, the Alabama State Department of Archives and History houses the James Hugh Blair Hall Collection. Dr. Hall wrote that on 5 August 1906 he interviewed Elijah Lindsay Fulton, grandson of Patriot David Lindsay, who stated his grandfather died in 1835.
David Lindsay was born in 1750 in the area claimed by both Pennsylvania and Virginia. He served with the Virginia Continental Lines during the American Revolution War. He married Mary Casey and received a Land Grant in 1787 (in Tennessee) for his service. He is a recognized patriot for the National Societies of the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution and Children of the American Revolution. David Lindsay is also a recognized early settler of Alabama for both the Shelby County Pioneer Certificate Program (Shelby County Historical Society, Inc.) and the First Families of Alabama Program (Alabama Genealogical Society, Inc.).
Members of the David Lindsay family began to appear in Alabama records in the early 1800's. David Lindsay patented land on the Flint River in Madison County in 1809. David and his son, Thomas Lindsay, both appeared on the 1809 census for Madison County, as did Richard Crowson, who married David's daughter, Sarah. David Lindsay, several sons, and in-laws appeared on Madison County tax lists between 1810-1816. David Lindsay and his son-in-law, Richard Crowson, also served as jurors in Madison County during this time period. David's sons Elijah, David Jr., and Joseph all married in Madison County between the years 1811-1819, as did his daughter, Rebecca. By 1820, David and his family had settled in Shelby County. In that year, David Lindsay and sons Elijah, James, John, and Joseph Lindsay all appeared on the Shelby County census, along with sons-in-law Richard Crowson and Joseph Hale. David Lindsay and his sons all bought land near each other in Shelby County. Between the years 1823-1834, they amassed a large quantity of land in Shelby County. In 1830, David Lindsay, and sons Thomas, James, Elijah, and John all appeared on the census in Shelby County, along with sons-in-law Richard Crowson, David Fulton, and Joseph Hale. By this time, David Lindsay and his wife were both 80-90 years old.
